One thing to remember:  Buffalo was, and probably still is, the second largest city in New York State.  There was a lot of commerce between the two cities so trains originating or terminating there was a common practices.  In later years CR ran "Empire Service" something similar to what Amtrak still does.  I suspect that NYC's second largest passenger source was Buffalo.
