(erielack) EL covered hoppers... in red?

Hi folks,
Here's something that's been puzzling me for a bit. This may be a carry-over from the DL&W days, but anyway...
What was the significance of painting some EL covered hoppers in dark red or maroon? All the cylindrical 20000-series cars were red, and there was at least one other (21893, a 3-bay Greenville car) that was painted red as well. It appears that the red cars were dedicated to soda ash service. The DL&W's large four-bay ACF covered hoppers were also painted red (for the same reason?)
Anyone know the REAL story behind the red paint?
- Paul
