Re: (erielack) FW: ICS Scranton Pennsylvania

The ICS (International Correspondence Schools) was a major employer in
scranton up until around 1960. Their main building in latter years was located on
Wyoming Ave at Ash St. I think it is now the Scranotn Prep School assiactaed
with the Diocese of Scranton.

The ICS had a huge printing plan on the other side of Wyoming Ave. where they
printed the text and work books for the correspondence courses. The company
also operated the International Textbook Co printing plan plus printed hard
cover best seller books under the name of Haddon Craftsman.

ICS put out a lot of courses for the railroad industry and bound sets of
these books show up fairly often. They have much in the way of excellent text and
illustrations on subjects such as locomotive boilermaking, car repair, air
brakes, etc.

Around 1960 there was a huge downsizing and they moved to a much smaller new
builind not to far from the Lackawanna's Cuyuga Jct. near Oak St.

Seems to me the railroads often paid for workers correspondence courses and I
recall seeing a passenger car in green with lettering for "International
Correspondced Schools -Air Brake Instruction Car".
