Here is a little more info about the Sterling Iron and Railway Company. The railroad was built in 1865 and was 7.6 miles long. In 1867 the company had 2 locomotives, one passenger car and 142 freight cars. By 1892 only 4 of the original 14 mines were operating and the heyday was over. There were several revival attempts. An associate of E.H. Harriman by the name of Theodore Price led one in 1905. I have attached a scan of a stock certificate in my collection from 1905 issued to E.H. Harriman himself. This one also failed and it was all over by November 1, 1923.

For anyone who wants more info, find a copy of Vanishing Ironworks of the Ramapos by James M. Ransom. This book was printed in 1966 and commands incredible prices when it turns up ($200 is not uncommon). It really should be re-published.
