Some are reported to derived from the place names used before white people
came and ruined North America.  Around here we have Parsippany,
Pequannock, Hopatcong, Netcong among many others.

Others are derived from places white people lived or for white people. 
Dover (from New Hampshire, not England), Mountain Lakes, Morristown,
Madison, etc.

If you think the names here are funny, go out on 'the Island' and ride the LIRR...
