Jim and all,

Thanks for your compliment Jim.  Based on the photos of the 4-6-4s in later 
years, the lettering was the conventional painted variety.  If you have 
Trackside Lackawanna by Mike Delvecchio, take a look at pages 70-74.  Looks 
to me like painted lettering.
