There is a port off of the cylinder saddle
casting that is hooked up to the exhaust passage from
the valve to the nozzle in the smokebox a pipe
delivers the exhaust steam to the exchanger ( any
feedwater version) Since steam locomotive a dual
acting pistons there is constant flow of exhaust steam
(except for a very breif period during the valve lap)
Since there was far more exhaust steam than could be
accepted by a BL unit the excess just went down the
normal passage to the exhaust nozzle. Usually it is a
3" to 4" delivery pipe from the exhaust port to the
exchanger.
