(erielack) West Shore & JP Mogran

The Story of Morgan, Chauncey Depew, president of the NYC, George
Roberts, Pres PA RR, Frank Thomson VP PA RR (nephew of John Edgar
Thomson) is detailed on pages 21, 22 and 23 of the small book
"Vanderbilt's Folly A History of the Pennsylvania Turnpike'", by
William H. Shank, P.E.
Tenth Printing March 1993.

A very interesting story of how JP had the money and power to cause two
very powerful railroads to agree with Morgan and stop this very
expensive and foolish battle. It was done July 1885. Depew president
of the New York Central system did most of the talking using such terms
as "community of interest" and "spheres of influence"

The result was that the South Penn RR (NYC) was traded for the West
Shore (PA)-along with another short line from the NYC to the PA and
other sidelines.

A neat deal that could not be done today.
