RE: (erielack) Commonwealth/State of Pa?

There's only 4 unless you wanted to count Puerto Rico. Interesting that
Pennsylvania on it's official seal is listed as a State. I guess it's ok
then to have "state" on the DL&W stock.

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Four of the constituent states of the United States officially designate
themselves Commonwealths: Kentucky, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, and
Virginia. This designation, which has no constitutional impact, emphasizes
that they have a "government based on the common consent of the people" as
opposed to one legitimized through their earlier Royal Colony status that
was derived from the King of England. (The word commonwealth is of English
derivation and refers to the common "weal" or well-being of the public.)

The Pennsylvania State Seal has a central image of a shield containing a
ship under full sail, a plow, and three sheaves of wheat. These symbols
represent the importance of commerce, labor, perseverance, and agriculture
to the state's economy, as well as several of its geographic components
(Philadelphia represented by the ship, for example). On either side of the
shield are a stalk of Indian corn and an olive branch, representing the
state's recognition of its past and hopes for the future. Atop the shield an
eagle proudly symbolizes the state's sovereignty. The outer ring of the seal
bears the words "Seal of the State of Pennsylvania," despite its official
designation as a "commonwealth."
