Agreed.  And in that situation, buses or trains are more cost-effective than cars.  My comments were intended to be more broad, aimed at bus and train travel supplanting existing (automobile) travel patterns, and not on narrowly-defined routes (ie, trips into Manhattan).  For the record, my final destination in the example I cited would be to Westchester county via Metro North, where I have no trouble parking.
