Re:Re: (erielack) Bus vs Train

This is why in those days owning a horse was a bit of a status symbol...it
still is, but for different reasons.

To the contrary, Will, before the advent of the railroad, freight went by
cart or wagon and people walked. Very little freight went by stage coach
and, for that matter, very few people, either.

Until the railroad came to town -- any town -- people lived and died within
walking distance of their birthplace. For the vast majority, there was no
alternative. People simply did not go until the railroad made mass
transportation a reality.  The networks of stage lines fed the railroads;
long distance stage travel was a rarity.

So there were no unnecessary railroads; marked road routes and pavement
were in the future; mud and dust were the rule.

In much of the world, they still are.

Randy,

Ox cart? I think even in Munnsville in the 19th century most people were a
little better off than that I suspect. There were at one time many stage
coach routes before there were trains. The train certainly was a huge step
forward with respect to speed and convenience of travel over any sort of
distance, but it wasn't a case of zero to one hundred in an instant. . . .

Regards,

Will
