It's been my wish, for a long time, that commuter roads collected fares the
same way the subway does; with turn stiles, everybody paying the same fare.
The distance an individual passenger rides doesn't affect the cost of
running a train.  Costs vary according to the length of its run and crew
size, (it seems to me;) and since those vary, that might somehow justify
distance-based fares.
