Hello List,

Interesting thread about crew sleeping arrangements for long distance
dining car runs.

Speaking of the Erie, it was practice up until 1950 for dining car
crews to sleep en route on top of the tables in the dining room. The
steward may have had a Section or a Roomette. In 1950, Erie took
delivery of five [622-626] streamlined lightweight RPO-Dormitory cars
built by AC&F Berwick. These cars had no vestibules. This was not
sufficient [seven of anything was needed to cover all Erie through
line trains -- which is why the seven pair of E-8 A-units] to cover
every through line trains. I am guessing that Nos. 7 and 8, the old
Pacific Express and Atlantic Express, respectively, did not get the
new cars when the other two train pair did. A class MD was included in
the consist of every Erie Limited and Lake Cities train at least until
the Lackawanna merger.

The only through line consist which I copied that has survived to this
day has appeared here once before but I will include it again for
anyone who may have missed it
