Bob,
I had the pleasure of meeting Dick Ike which was "Shine's" real name. I rode
the Sussex Drill with him and engineer "Chub" Grogan from Andover Jct. to
Branchville and return.
He showed me that watch. He also collected presidential campaign buttons
where Ike Eisenhower and running mate Richard Nixon were represented by
their
nicknames and thus represented his own first and last names. He wore one of
these
buttons on his overalls as I recall. He carried that very watch in the
center
top pocket of his bib overalls. He invited me to visit at his house which I
did in Port Morris. Like many people who have a close call with death, Dick
"got
religion" but he never pressed it on me. I may have ridden with him again
but
definitely did see him on other jobs around Port Morris.
He said the kid was shooting pigeons and the bullet was a ricochet.
He was also referred to as "Flying Shine." I think it had something to do
with a run away caboose but can't recall more than that. Rich Taylor may be
able
to add to this. I think either he or George Berisso might have present at
these meetings with Dick Ike.

I revisited with Shines Son ( also a Richard ) today. I asked him about the
runaway, which he knew all about. It was the Morristown Roustabout and
they were taking 6 loads of coal up to Greystone Hospital on the short ( about
two miles long ) but STEEP branch. When they got up at the top they cut the
caboose away. His son says they were making a drop. ?? Track arrangement
doesn't coincide with that but any way, when he started to put the hand
brake on it didn't work. Apparently the chain had broken. He yelled to the
Conductor that he had no brake, and the guy yelled to get off. He knew that
there were kids playing near the tracks down at the bottom of the branch so he
stayed on. Braced himself in the middle of the Caboose for most of the
trip. Near the bottom he went out and started yelling "run away caboose" to
warn everyone. He said one lady that saw it started screaming. Approaching
the curve near the main and the four box cars left on the stub ended freight
house track he bailed off, going head over heals. I guess he was scrapped up
and banged up but after examination in the hospital nothing was broken. I
asked about the caboose and he said it came right off its trucks and rode up
into the box car it hit. Looking through his old time log its marked as March
23, 1955
