The Martins Creek power plant has four generation units with a total capacity of about 1,970 megawatts.

The plant is located on a 750-acre site on the Delaware River in Lower Mount Bethel Township, Northampton County, about 15 miles north of Easton, Pa. The plant has about 220 full-time employees (figure adjusted for seasonal workload).

Units 1 and 2 are coal-fired, and have a generating capacity of 150 megawatts each. They began commercial operation in 1954 and 1956, respectively. These units are scheduled to be shut down or repowered in September 2007.

Units 3 and 4 have a generating capacity of about 835 megawatts each and can be fueled by natural gas, oil or both. The units were built in 1974 and 1976, respectively, to burn crude or No. 6 fuel oil. In 1996, PPL modified the units so they could burn natural gas as well.

Martins Creek is owned and operated by a subsidiary of PPL Generation. PPL manages hiking trails upriver from the plant as part of the 215-acre Martins Creek Environmental Preserve. Martins Creek also has a boat launch area that is open to the public.

Adjacent to Martins Creek is PPL's Lower Mount Bethel plant, a 582-megawatt power plant fueled by natural gas.

On Aug. 4, 1999, Martins Creek achieved "Star" certification in the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration’s Voluntary Protection Program. The plant was recertified in December 2002.

The program recognizes companies that go beyond compliance to protect worker health and safety. The VPP Star certification is the highest safety recognition given within the program
