(erielack) Re: Attica Branch Questions

Steve,

Did MF-74 take any Shawmut coal to Buffalo? That would be another reason to operate via Salamanca and NT.

I'm not familiar with the salt operations on the Buffalo Division.

BM-7, BM-9, RC-98 and MF-74 operated via B&SW and River Line from time to time as the traffic patterns changed, new traffic was developed or old traffic lost.

When I first started in 1965 all of those trains operated via B&SW. After the trains got too big for the hill, the River Jct Wye Track was rebuilt and BM-9/MF-74 operated via River Jct (NT). BM-7 and RC-98 operated via B&SW.

Trains operating via NT did set off and pick up at Silver Springs on occasions, and at other times, the traffic was hauled into Bison and brought back on a Way Freight. It changed frequently; with change of local and divisional management. There were always different plans to operate better and more efficiently.

Probably the best plan was one that the Meadville crews operated RC-98 via B&SW, rested in Buffalo and returned via River Jct on BM-9.

The Buffalo crews operated BM-7 via the B&SW, rested in Meadville and returned to Buffalo on MF-74 via River Jct.

This plan was not cast in stone either because if BM-9 had 12 cars leaving Buffalo the crew would ask to go B&SW, shorter, quicker route with small train and still get paid the mileage via NT.

BM-7 would usually handle cars for Hamburg, Dayton,Jamestown and Meadville. Train would show up at Waterboro with 4 GP-7's and 10 or 15 cars. On the flip side, the BM-9 was usually a tonnage train with 120 cars or more.
