RE: (erielack) Obscure DL&W Hopper Question

Jim,

Here is what little I know of the class of hopper you are looking at. It was
part of the class 78600 to 79949. There where only 12 of these 50 ton cars
from this class left on the railroad as of the January 1955 ORER. The cars
where first built in 1912 although I do not know when the car you are asking
about was built or by whom. There are two photos of these cars in Thomas
Tabers "The Delaware, Lackawanna Western Railroad in the Twentieth Century"
on page 699. The cars are 35'1" Outside Length and Extreme Outside Width of
10'3", 10'1" Over The Eaves. There are hoppers numbered above and below this
class that shared the same load capacity and almost identical dimensions but
I am not sure if they are of the same design or not.

Subject: (erielack) Obscure DL&W Hopper Question

Can anyone tell me anything about DL&W Hopper 79478 or its sisters in that
series?

Built? By whom? Scrapped?

Thanks!

Cheers,
Jim
