(erielack) New tunnel

The New Yotrk Times reported today that ground would be broken on Monday (today? Or next week?) for the new Mass Transit Tunnel into Manhattan. (Apparently, it's no longer THE Tunnel; just another one)
They reported the plan for a new station in Manhattan 18 stories down in the bedrock.

The article touts the project as a boon to commuters and the environment through the diversion of auto traffic to rail and glances at the political considerations of a New Jersey agency building a project in New York and the lack of connections to either Pensylvania Station or Grand Central Terminal. However, it makes no mention of how the new system will carry thousands of commuters per hour to the surface. How will they do it? An escalator as long as a football field? Several boxcar-sized elevators?

The article did mention one criticism: the difficulty of evacuation in an emergency.

Well, time and money will tell -- eight years and $8+billion.
