(erielack) Freedom Secondary news

Saw this in my hometown paper this morning, the Record-Courier, and thought a few others might be interested in it. The Freedom Secondary is the Erie main through Portage County Ohio through Ravenna and Kent. Rail content is toward the end of the article.

"That value would be offset if Ravenna would forgive the $175,000 debt
the county owes on the Freedom Secondary Railroad. The county took on
the debt when it acquired the seven miles of track about eight years ago
 from Portage Private Industry Council.
 The county contracts with
the Akron Barberton Cluster Railway to operate the line, which serves
Smurfit Stone in Ravenna, bringing in four rail cars twice a week. The
loan is to be paid out of profits from operating the line but, because
it is used so little, little has been paid over the years.
“That’s
on track to being paid back next day to never,” Marsilio said.
Officials
agreed the line should be kept as an economic development asset that
may grow in future. Smeiles suggested the county may look to
transferring the railway’s ownership to an economic development body in
the county. The section of the line in Summit County is owned by the
Summit County Port Authority, he noted."
