Subject: DLW Trailer Move
"DLW_CIBA_load.jpg" - image/jpeg, 1427x794 (24bit)

Lackawanna used this photo in advertising and an annual report. I've
always wondered about it and now Railway Age (8-26-57) supplies the
interesting details.

This was the first coast-to-coast piggyback shipment of pharmaceuticals
(35,000 lbs. of "Privine") from CIBA in Summit, NJ to Millbrae, CA. The
photo shows the trailer being loaded in Summit (8-07) and it arrived in
California (8-15) via a routing of DL&W- NKP- Cotton Belt-SP (through
the St-Louis Gateway).

The new trailer is from the 53l-585 series of (35') Fruehauf Vans built
in 1957. (Did any of these get re-lettered EL?)

Other questions:

- Was CIBA Pharmaceuticals an off-line customer in Summit? Are they
still located there?

- Where would this trailer likely be ramped, the new facility in Port
Morris or back at Grove Street in Hoboken?

- I thought pharmaceuticals would have to be shipped in a controlled
environment. How hot is it going to get in that trailer with over a
week in transit across the Southwest in August.
