The archives at Steamtown have a couple folders dealing with flour handling
in the 1920s and 1930s on the DL&W. None of them mention bulk handling of
flour. Mostly they seem to focus on condensation problems in boxcars with
steel roofs and ends. It appears a lot of damage occurred in the early 20s
and the railroads had to figure out how to control the condensation problem.
All the flour moved mentioned in our files seem to focus an bags and
barrrels. We also have some "flour" files for the LVRR, but I could not
find any mention of using boxcars to ship it in bulk.

Pat & List,

I ran across an interesting article on roof construction in my flour
research. Attached is an article from the April 1922 issue of "Railway &
Locomotive Engineering" magazine which discusses the problems of loading
warm flour and having the roofs sweat and cause damage. One answer was to
cover the lading with paper to protect it. In another article I saw a
proposal to build a second wood roof under the steel roof to allow
circulation and help prevent dripping.
