Jack Emrick took this picture in July of 1957. I believe this the last
summer for the tower. A distant relative of mine was one of the tower
operators - Sid Sauter. I was 10 years old when this picture was taken and
was just starting to expand off my home base exploring the community. I
walked up close to the tower one or two times before the day came when I
saw them knocking it down. I always thought the tower was secluded from
the town of Mountain View. You could only walk to it, there was no
roadway. This picture looks southeast with the Erie Mountain View station
in the distance center right. When looking at this retrospectively so much
changed in what now looks like a short time. By 1959 the Boonton Line
would be single tracked with CTC installed between Paterson and Montville.
By 1963 the new turnout diverting all Boonton Line trains onto the
Greenwood Lake was completed and all that was left was the industrial
spur.
