The practice was used on the non electrified lines also. Attached is a scan
from the 2/7/1978 storm of such a "Blizzard" extra. This was the second
blizzard that year, the first blizzard hit on January 20th. During both
storms I watched the trains run back and forth behind my house in Allendale
trying to keep the track clear.

Paul & List,

Such practice was also used by EL to keep the catenary clear of ice. The

DL&W also used these trains to transport forces used to shovel station

platforms. In icy conditions, MU equipment used the #1 pantograph which

was sprung higher to maintain contact with the trolley wire.

I thought I remembered Art Erdman recalling that on snowy days, the EL just
kept running "dummy trains" to keep the tracks free of snow. Why can't that
be done today?
