Subject: Derailment on the Greenwood Lake

The poster who started this discussion about the freight detours over the
New York & Greenwood Lake referred to a severe derailment that took place.
Not sure if anyone has posted this but he might have been referring to the
derailment that took place in October 1973. This was a 52-car eastbound
NY100 that derailed in Bloomfield at 4:25 am. The line runs on an
embankment in this part of Bloomfield and derailing cars went off the
embankment east of the Broad Street overpass in Bloomfield. At least one
home was seriously damaged,

It was reported, "Joseph Sipple, New York division superintendent for the
Erie‐Lackawanna, said at the accident site that the overhead track
structure had nothing to do with the derailment. "The first car to derail
was the 10th car, the result of a faulty weld in the locking device of the
transfer plate used to move trailers from one car to another,” Mr. Sipple
said. “The plate carried east, becoming wedged between the station platform
and the trackside, causing the 10th car to derail.” The bridge under
construction over Broad Street, he said, in no way contributed to the
accident. Bernard Minetti, principal engineer for P.U.C., said, “I'm
satisfied that the cause of the derailment was the bridge plate which
became dislodged.” The P.U.C. inspected the tracks last Thursday and found
them safe for freight moving al, a speed of 25 miles an hour, he said."

I'm also attaching a news article from the NEW YORK TIMES archive that
describes the incident and has two news photos. I converted it to image
format.
