Here's a photo of the last EL train I photographed at Great Notch, March 1976. It was an eastbound (SF-100 or BC-2) struggling upgrade though the crossovers just west of the station. As you can see the sanders and throttle are open! That's the abandoned Caldwell branch with a coating of rust on the left. SD-45 3603 was trailed by a U-boat and another SD-45 inching toward you.
The second photo was taken April 1 1976. it's CS-9 westbound at Great Notch with SD-45 3611 leading a GP-7 around 1:30 pm. That's the seldom used east switch leading to the small three track yard off track 2 in the foreground. This whole area in now under wire and the location of NJ Transit's modern "Great Notch Yard" facility.
And to think 28 years ago the EL tracks would spit mud at you from under the ties as they sagged under the weight of these freights!
