I checked Ray Baxter's book - RAILROAD FERRIES OF THE HUDSON RIVER and
discovered that the 14th Street Ferry run was inaugurated by Hoboken Ferry
before Lackawanna purchased controlling interest in the company. Vehicle
traffic on this line dropped off when the Lincoln Tunnel was opened in
1937. At the beginning of WWII Bethlehem Steel and Tiejen & Lang needed
more space for ship building. The 14th Street slips were acquired by the
US Government and the last ferry ran on April 26th 1942.

Lackawanna promoted this as a shortcut avoiding the vehicle traffic in
Hoboken. I'm attaching a photo that Beranice Abbott took in the 1930s.
