Those who model the EL in HO after 1966 surely have the enormous 86’ auto parts boxcars on their radar. Tangent broke the old Athearn mold several years back with a flood of spectacular models of the Greenville versions. Having only one of the Athearn models, the 8-door EL version, a gift that is a sentimental favorite, I went crazy with the Tangent cars. I have I think 21 of them. Tangent is, in my humble opinion, by far the leader in R-T-R freight car model production these days: well made, perfect lettering and colors, in-stock immediately upon announcement (no pre-ordering), and shipping at cost. So call me biased :-)

At any rate, for those that don’t know and may be interested, Class One Model Works just released their latest 86-footers, the 8-door Thrall Car Co versions and while they are just as nice as the Tangent cars, I have a few minor nits to pick and I’ve attached a few photos to this email for illustration, with a new Tangent 60-foot auto parts car for comparison.

Class One used a pre-order system and I ordered two of the EL versions, at full list price of course, but I didn’t want to miss these. They were delivered late last week. They are still available, but listed as “low-stock” on their website. They are also on sale for 10% off. A nice thumb in the eye to pre-ordering suckers like me. Sigh…

The color is I bit muddy to me - not as rich a red as I think it ought to be. But after weathering it won’t be a big deal. The lettering is generally very nice, with the stand-out exception, front and center, of the yellow “Cushioned Car” logo - it looks like a PRR font and does not match other similarly-lettered EL cars, or photos for that matter (and If a certain very important friend of the EL had anything to do with it, no slight intended of course ;-)

My final nit is the packaging. Don’t get me wrong - they’re packaged very well, in the usual 2-piece plastic shell inside a sturdy end-opening box. But they felt the need to add a twee magnet-sealed flip lid to the box. Completely extraneous and frivolous. Cut the cost of that and therefore the cost of the car itself.

Ok, stepping off my soap box, I’ll say yes, they’re very nice models and I will be very happy to have them running once I get my basement layout up and running. Get ‘em while you can!
