Paul,

Attached is the Lake Ontario map of car ferries.

The DL&W coal trestle was at the mouth of Buffalo harbor and the activity
there frequently blocked the entrance. The Corp of Engineers seized the
trestle 4 times and took the DL&W to court to throw them out. The city and
other shipping interests also threatened and complained. The DL&W several
times threatened to move the coal operations to Oswego and ship from there,
although I don't think they were serious. They also looked into moving the
trestle to Black Rock.

Initially when the DL&W came into Buffalo in 1882, they wanted to put the
trestle on the Blackwell Canal but were blocked by the Erie.

The Buffalo waterfront was so busy that when the LV wanted waterfront land,
they couldn't get any, so they created their own artificial harbor inland
called Tift Farm (on cow pasture land) in 1881, reached thru a long series
of canals. The LV built up a large lake fleet and fought right up to the
Supreme Court to keep their fleet. They were the last to sell off, in 1917.
The LV also had a Erie canal company, a Finger Lakes fleet, plus their NY
City fleet. They loved their boats and adopted the fleet Flag as their logo.
