Subject: Greenwood Lake Branch Question - Passaic River vessel traffic #2
"DSC05051.jpg" - image/jpeg, 2048x1536 (24bit)

This is a follow up to my prior message on Passaic River traffic

I've attached a photo taken December 3, 2008 of the tug Robert IV pushing the loaded barge Cold Spring Harbor downriver, having just completed loading at Innovation Fuels (Biofuel terminal at end of Erie Newark Branch).

The barge is approaching Amtrak's ex PRR Dock bridge near Newark Penn Station (notice outer spans are raised - the span carrying PATH tracks is higher above the water and was not raised in this case).

Four other bridges are plainly visible in the photo which looks upriver northwestward:

Pale blue swing bridge is Bridge Street connecting Newark on left with Harrison on right.
Next is the DL&W Morristown Line bridge - you can see brighter blue trusswork.
Immediately behind the DL&W are the two blue towers of the I-280 Stickel lift bridge - one of the few drawbridges on an interstate highway.
Further to the right you can see the black "jackknife" bascule bridge "NX" on the Erie Newark Branch. This bridge has been in the "open" position for quite some time (35 years or so). The white tanks to the left near NX are the site of Innovation Fuels.

With a sharp eye you may also be able to make out the top of the Clay Street Swing Bridge which is located between I-280 and NX. Clay Street links Newark with East Newark, a tiny municipality in Hudson County that is surrounded by Kearny and Harrison.
