Subject: Croxton washrack... a theory
"3319+3318_In_washrack-Train_CS-9_-_Croxton_NJ_-_5-5-74_-_Curt_Carlough.jpg" - image/jpeg, 1315x872 (24bit)

Hi folks,

My statement earlier was tongue-in-cheek, but the more I think about it, the
more I think it could possibly be true:

Could the Croxton washracks (installed in 1972) been put in for the primary
purpose of washing the NJDOT fleet of U34CH's? I think the Hoboken washrack
was designed for passenger cars, not diesels.

Also, the comment that the installation of the washrack accounts for the
cleanliness of EL diesels post-1972 doesn't quite fit with the images I have
in my photo collection. There's plenty of grimy and not-so-clean EL
roadpower in there. What I think people notice are the clean-and-shiny
polyurethane repainted units, of which Hornell seemed to be turning out
quite a bit in those years. Those units also tended to stay cleaner, and a
lot of "premier" road power was so repainted. This might lead people to
think that the EL was washing its power more often.

Just a theory...

By the way, the EL *did* wash units other than U34CH's - see the attached
shot taken by my friend Curt Carlough at Croxton on May 5, 1974. I'm just
not sure how often they did use the rack.

- Paul
