Another livestock item which I came across was that the DL&W supplied 90-95%
of the poultry to New York City. See attached excrept from a 1920 ICC
Report. Also, in 1904 the Lackawanna had 50 poultry cars on its roster.

As for the meat processing industry, attached are some stats from 1925 for
Buffalo. Nearly 2 million animals were slaughtered and packed at Buffalo. My
father worked for the Railway Post Office at NYC terminal, right next door,
and I remember the smells when the wind was blowing your way. My great
grandfather was a manager at the NYC stockyards.

Another industry that goes along with yards and packing are rendering
plants. You get a lot of dead animals in transit, or others rejected for
desease or other reasons. These go to rendering plants. Buffalo would not
allow them as they had enough with the stockyards. So the industry moved
over the city line to Cheektowaga (Sloan) and set them up next to the DL&W
yards.
