Subject: Track trauma
"JOE_1945EM.jpg" - image/jpeg, 1000x664 (24bit)

I will declare the following question relevant here as the track conditions
I am inquiring about either could have appeared on our favorite three roads
or else our roads would certainly strive to avoid damaging track this way.

On reviewing photos from this past summer, I came upon the attached photo
taken specifically with our List in mind because of the questions raised on
site. When backpacking or hiking out in Zion National Park, I usually need a
rest day and I often drive out into the Escalante Desert west of Cedar City
UT to the tiny, semi-ghosttown of Modena UT, just miles from the Nevada
state line. The SLC-Las Vegas-LA UP mainline goes through Modena and it is a
quiet, beautiful trainwatching spot. I was startled this trip to find this
kind of track trauma to the MAIN track -- both rails (inside) and extending
as far as I could see. What would cause such impact on a railhead in
basically high-speed, open territory? All those surface lines were actually
fine, sharp ridges so that it felt like a very effective file if one rubbed
a finger along it.
