Paul & List,

I have a photo I took of the same crane, taken in 1982 at Owego, NY. My
guess was that Conrail added the -1 for some reason.

Paul, there was no date on your photo. Was it CR era?

I have another photo of EL crane 2917 taken at Hornell about 1983. Conrail
repainted the 2917 in larger letters, put a yellow "E" on the cab, and
underneath renumbered it ECL 2534.

Another guess: because these cranes were purchased new, and periodically
subject to State (and FRA?) inspection requirements, I think it was
necessary to know the prior number assigned to the car in order to maintain
a continuous and chronological inspection record for regulatory purposes.

Note: These cranes were purchased by Erie in early 1950's and renumbered
into 2900 series by EL. Originally in 03--- series.
