The Morris Canal is abandoned by this point, and the large through-truss bridge on the DL&W will be removed and replaced by a fill when this gets widened to four tracks. The bridge directly behind the railroad bridge is the Morris Ave. viaduct, which itself was demolished and rebuilt in 1996. The stone wall along Main St. on the right STILL EXISTS TODAY, but the Edmunds building was completely demolished as part of the track expansion here.

The Morris Canal bed is in the bottom foreground, along with the towpath. Today, this is the parking lot for NJ Transit's Boonton station. Sharp-eyed viewers will spot the freight house beyond the Rockaway River bridge as well as the lower quadrant semaphores (approach signals for the Boonton interlocking?)

>X5468--Boonton, NJ--View LOOKS east from> Rockaway River Bridge [1927.03.23]

A good number of the structures in this scene are gone today - Edmunds building at the right, the large brick market at the corner of Main and Division, the home seen on Division St., and the first structure north (to the left) of Morris Avenue - that's the road sloping down paralleling the tracks. OF NOTE: Image X0112 (attached for your reference) is taken just east of this bridge and is the same angle, showing Morris Avenue being constructed back in 1909 :)

>X5469--Boonton, NJ--VIEW LOOKS NORTH AT West driveway under Rockaway River Bridge [1927.03.23]

CORRECTION: That is not a "driveway" but rather is West Monroe Street (see the attached Sanborn map). Once Interstate 287 was constructed through Boonton, this was just a stub road that connected the 287 entrance ramp with Morris Ave (and after the Morris Ave. reconstruction, this road was closed off)

To be more specific, this is NOT the DL&W bridge but rather the Morris Ave bridge over the Rockaway River. The DL&W bridge parallels this bridge but is out of view to the left. You can see the railings to prevent cars from driving into the river here (trust me, it's a scary drive here, especially around the curve to climb up to Morris Ave (seen in the middle of the photo).

For reference, I've attached two photos I took from almost the same spot as X5470 of the Morris Ave. bridge in the middle of "deconstruction".... You can see the "ramp" leading up to Morris Ave a bit better here.
