This afternoon's weather was relatively nice for cycling - so I went for a
ride to Boonton after lunch.

On the way there, I saw something large and dark next to a tree just off
the side of Green Pond Road. The first two photos show what I saw, from a
safer distance than when I first saw it. These views show it on the
right-of-way of the one-time Hibernia Mine Railroad!!!

I took some different roads to Boonton to look at the derelict ex-LIRR
MP54's that have been parked there for ages; the owner says he WILL remove
them 'soon'. The third photo shows them and the fourth shows train 1025
which came shortly after I got there. No, I was not harassed by the train
crew and left long before any police could have come if summoned.

I then rode down US 202 to see the new bridge over an arm of the Boonton
Reservoir. It opened a few months ago and the old bridge, having historic
value, is being rebuilt for pedestrian and bicycle use - it is cut off
from the road and the access walkway is still under construction.

I had to go home through Mountain Lakes to avoid the steep hill on US 46
at the west end of Parsippany - there's no safe place for cyclists with
the shoulder replaced by a climbing lane almost never used for slow trucks
climbing the hill but rather for cars to pass on the right; I do it myself
if the truck is doing 40. I remembered the route and was successful in
avoiding the dangerous hill climb. I crossed the recently-rebuilt bridge
at Fanny Road (over the Boonton Line) and then paralleled the track, but
didn't see anything worth photographing.

I detoured past the Rockaway Road bridge (over the Morristown line)
replacement site and noted progress. I was surprised to see one of the
old uprights is being reconstructed for use in the new bridge. Three
other uprights were completely removed and one new one is yet to be built,
though a cofferdam for its base is in place and reinforcing steel extends
upward from it. At this rate, they have another year of work! The last
photo shows the current state of the bridge work.

Cycling distance: 23.3 miles, year-to-date total 953.9.
