Randy Brown made some astute observations:

> There is still at least one ladder to the roof, with the attendant
grabirons on
> the roof -- indicating top loading?

Many rebuilt 40' boxcars (and the rebuilding is usually indicated by the
deeper reinforced sidesill under the doors, as on this car) retained the
tall corner ladder but had the yellow "KEEP OFF ROOF - NO RUNNING BOARDS"
sticker next to the ladder - you can see it to the left of the ladder in the
photo. If, as Steve Timko said, they put up "grain doors" (large sheets of
paper covering the bottom of the door opening), they could just blow the
sand in there via a hose through that door opening.

> The lettering almost looks hand-drawn.

It's certainly hand-stencilled, and rather poorly done, but I'm guessing it
was just a quick restencil from a regular service car to rush it into sand
service.

> The end number has been altered at the 417.

It has been altered completely - as painted, the car had Roman end stencils
- the same typeface as the end "EL" - but looks like it was restenciled
using Gothic stencils for the "030" (you can see the stencil marks in the
"0"s) and the "417" almost looks like it was masked by hand (those numbers
appear to be 5" tall compared to the standard 4"). It's definitely a
hodge-podge of a lettering job that is worthy of modeling!

Besides this boxcar, black-painted covered hoppers 427219-427221 also were
assigned to Croxton sand service (see the attached Karl Geffchen shot)

Anyone have photos of the pneumatic device used to transport the sand?
