Going to Drew U starting Fall 59, I quickly learned of the mid-day
service the railroad provided on both Christmas and New Years Eve.
Hoboken was a great place to hang out to see all the action, provided
you could withstand the typically cold weather.

The first time I viewed this action was Friday December 30, 1960 - so
not strictly New Years Eve but the last business day of the year. I kept
a log of the action which is a little spotty as I moved around a bit.
But I can say that between 1 PM and 1:30, just a half hour, there were
nine outbound departures. Three of these were MU extras carrying white
flags, good sized trains of 8, 11, and 10 cars.

The train count of course does not begin to describe all the action.
Push-pull trains were still far off in the future so there were many
moves of lite engines and switchers.

I mentioned the cold weather which in my memory was a big part of the
experience. On one occasion, I was with a friend and after a few hours,
we had to retreat to a local diner. The customers were apparently being
shown some appreciation on this occasion and were being served a shot.
That was a nice treat for two frozen teens.

The attached black and white is mine, the color shot was taken by my
late friend Bob Duthie.
