The NY & Harlem went down The Bowery and Park Row to past City
Hall....Park Row was the newspaper street....
Before this it was an "Indian path". it led to Fort Amsterdam....it was
all called The Bowery because you took this road to Governor Peter
Stuyvesant's mid-seventeenth century "bouwerie", (Dutch for Estate)
Blacks in NYC early on, freed slaves settled there and would warn the
populace of "Indian" raids.....This was the original route, trail from
New York to New England..the oldest road out of the city....
Southern portion called Park Row from 1833
The first Italian opera performance, The Barber of Seville, was at the
Park Theatre on Park Row in 1825....
random facts of its pre-railroad history, before the horsecars and
omnibuses
