Rail station may open before winter
Saratoga Springs facility was delayed by redesign

The new Saratoga Springs train station is on track for an early December
opening, Capital District Transportation Authority officials said Wednesday.
CDTA board members had expressed hope early this year that the fall opening
target would mean "early fall," but Executive Director Stephen Bland said
the opening date should at least meet the technical definition of autumn,
coming before the first day of winter on Dec. 21.

Bland said the need to replan parts of the project and put them out for bid
again after early bids were higher than anticipated is one reason
construction on the $5.9 million station expansion and renovation did not
move along more swiftly.

"We essentially had to redesign, and there is some fairly detailed steel
work," he said. "The main driving goal was that it comes in well under
budget."

A precise opening date will depend on Amtrak's moving schedule, Bland said.
Since construction began last year, rail travelers have used a temporary
station placed at the site.

In other business, the CDTA board approved a $155,700 contract with
Mid-State Industries of Schenectady to supply and install gutters and other
structural features to prevent ice and water from falling on sidewalks,
escalators and platforms at the Rensselaer Rail Station.

The project, which is part of CDTA's capital project budget this year, will
be partially funded by $124,800 in federal money and $15,600 from the state,
according to CDTA.
