Re: (rshsdepot) East Williston NY

First, the railroad, the MTA, did knock it down...
Second, since I don't drive by there or live there I didn't even know they had abandoned the building....
East Williston is well to do, they ask for street widenings, and all that...if they don't seem to have a sense of history and they
are the ones who knew....well you see the point...The point is Rockville Centre had plans to move the 1873 depot to a park but 9/11
happened and I guess this meant they didn't remember since, so it is gone..
Also the East Williston depot does not seem the type of building that could be moved very easy...the LIRR tends to demolish
everything on their property when they don't use it, the small cute Tower in Garden City on Franklin Avenue, demolished and replaced
with a flower box...

I have no idea the plans for Hewlett depot, on line there are pages about plans to save it but they are 5 years old....If I asked
Rockville Centre Historical Society why they didn't save that old depot I would get runarounds, it would cost too much, there is too
much bureaucracy..I have gone through this before in other places, it is very frustrating when the historical society doesn't really
care...There aren't many of these old stations left in Nassau County. Sea Cliff I guess is the best of the old now used still, since
this one they fixed up I guess they plan on leaving it be....

And personally I don't buy the deteriorating thing....pay the insurance and leave it there, I remember in Iowa stations that looked
like they were crumbling and they were, and now they are used as s restaurants....East Williston is usually considered a classy
area. That no one could see to reuse this very historic structure, the only type like it I think left, then they are far more
classless than I thought

: Part of the problem, my friends, is this:
: the RR DOESN'T tear down the building, but nobody in the area ("nobody"
: being the collective term for individuals and/or local historical societies)
: (as Dave noted) steps up to the plate.
:
: Two PERFECT examples here in the scumshine state:
: the people of Boca Raton (built by the famed architect Addison Mizner)
: realized that the FEC depot was deterioriating and finally got together,
: raised the money and bought it. It serves today as a marvelous gathering
: spot and community center, and, so I keep being told, an eventual RR museum;
:
: the SCHMUCKS of Daytona Beach watched their stunningly beautiful FEC depot
: deteriorate and deteriorate and did NOTHING. The FEC had no choice but to
: tear it down AFTER it was declared unsafe because said morons in Daytona did
: NOTHING. AFTER the demolition there was a hue and cry and I went up and
: made it clear to them that it was their own fault and that their doing
: exactly nothing was the exact opposite of what Boca Raton had done and that,
: had they acted in a positive and proactive manner, had benefits, fund
: raisers and put together an action committee they could have saved the
: station.
:
: Today, each community must take responsibility for it's own insightfulness
: and foresight OR for it's own stupidity.
