I suspect that was because the cars were not intended to ever be used in interchange, so the AAR rules about lettering could
be ignored.

Ahh, Paul, even in them thar days of yore, that attempt by CHS was flat out hideous. You forgot to mention that the stripes
were about 6" wide too.
