(erielack) Vestal Spur

NY 17 is still that, although progress is being made on turning it into I 86, which it is from I 90 near Erie to Corning.

The Vestal station is sitting in the library parking lot, and is now the Vestal Museum.

The rails were taken up a few years ago-2001, I think. They ran all the way to Main St, though had been out of service west of National Pipe for as long as I can remember, back to the mid 80's. I'm sure someone here(Walt Smith??) will know when service was cut back on the line. I used to drive down the Parkway and look over at the tracks, wondering what it might be like to pace a trio of DLW F-3's on a freight....

Rough guess, I'd have to say there is about 5 miles of track still in existence west of BD on the line, about 2 miles from BD to the point where the spur leaves the Johnson Runner, and about another 3 on the spur, all of it in service. The rest is gone, either paved over on the trail, or just abandoned and lifted.

Thanks, Tom. I had passed through on NY-17 (I believe it's been renumbered
now, is that true?) a few years ago and was surprised to see the tracks
gone from the old station site in Vestal (the station was moved a block or
two away some years ago, as you know). So, the amount of track still
remaining on the old DL&W ROW from Binghamton west, including that which is
out of service, would be about how many miles would you say?
