(erielack) Burning "Owl"



Here is another fire story.  #15 was in the depot in Scranton being
worked on in the wee hours of 11-28-64 when an EL conductor discovered a
fire in the sealed Cleveland express car (to be handed off to the NYC in
Buffalo). The car (second from the locomotive) was carrying 384 sacks of
third and fourth class mail for Ohio distribution.  It was detached and
moved to a siding where Scranton firemen spent about three hours putting
out the blaze..  In the end over half the load was damaged, with
charred, wet mail scattered all over the platform.  The mess was
collected and taken to the Scranton Parcel Post Annex for reprocessing.
At the time of the article the cause of the fire was unknown, but it was
suspected that it may have started soon after the mail was loaded in
Hoboken.
