re: (erielack) Salamanca turntable

John
I believe the Erie had a Joint Facility Agreement with the BR&P (B&O) for
the turning of engines on the East Salamanca wye at "X" dollars per engine.
In working up the AFE (Authority for Expediture) justifying the new
Turntable the expense of operation without the new Turntable would be a
factor. The distance from Salamanca to East Salamanca on the B&O's
single-track line is 1.35 miles. Turning on the East Salamanca wye
involved occupying the B&O southbound Main Track and, I believe, the
movement would require use of at least a two-man engine crew. WDB is
absolutely correct that the Erie management had to consider this very
carefully but the costs of this potentially delay-ridden and labor-intensive
operation certainly assisted the swing of economics in favor of the new
turntable.
