re: (erielack) Salamanca turntable

This was a very late investment in steam--practically a waste of
money--necessitated by the fact that there were not as yet enough diesels to
equip the
whole main line, coupled with the company's apparent strategy of
prioritizing
those segments of the main line with grades for dieselization, while leaving
the
heavily reengineered Allegany Division until last. I'll bet senior
management
really fussed over this one--I would have! A good example of expenditures
that sometimes must be made in the railroad business whether you like it or
not.

I spoke with my Dad about the replacement of the Salamanca turntable; he was
acquainted
with the hostler there. At the time of the upgrade, the hostler routinely
took engines to
E. Salamanca, in order to turn them on the B&O wye there.

Perhaps the Erie unsuccessfully tried to strike a deal with the B&O, for a
permanent
arrangement to use their wye? If Berkshires were being turned this way
regularly during
1944-45, and full dieselization were anticipated, it would seem likely that
Erie management
would have wanted to continue this practice. . .
