(erielack) Re: NJ place names > Denville

My friend, the unofficial "Mayor of Cedar Lake" and amateur Denville historian, sends this additional info on Denville:

"A book of Denville history I have mentions the Denton theory, but notes that
the Elizabethtown Purchase did not extend north of Morristown, and that
there's no hard evidence Daniel Denton came through Denville or lent his
name to it. Early settler John Hinchman wrote in 1800 that a knoll on
the Rockaway River (where Lake Arrowhead is, named for the number of
them found there, and not far from Job Allen's 1730 iron works)
attracted herds, and "it was a den of wild animals, hence the name of
the brook and the Village of Denville." Also inconclusive, as is the
story that a John Den lived at the time of the Revolution where the
brook and river meet. A mysterious town, my home! ;-) "
