One word will help -- topography.  There were/are hills between the various termini that made it not worth the trouble:  the conjoined lines would serve no purpose.  Finally, Florida was 20 miles (and more hills) away.

It's very interesting that being so close to the Erie's other branches such as the Greenwood Lake which went to it's namesake terminus and the line to Florida and Pine Island, that somehow these lines were never connected someway. There was also the Ringwood Branch. The all terminated or weren't very far fom one another. Any comments on this?
