Re: (erielack) Sterling Mt. Ry

Just a guess - contractual obligations and/or ownership of individual mine complexes, not to mention the mountain, made connection with different parts of the Erie easier.

The Ringwood mines (Canon, Peter's, Blue, Keeler) had their own "dinky" 3'2" steam gauge railroad to transport the raw ore to a system of chutes that emptied into Erie hoppers. This site is just east of the Ringwood Police Station on Margaret King Avenue. About a year ago, Margaret King Avenue was paved over; just prior to this, you could see the double tracks poking through the older layer of asphalt.

This was from the original alignment of the Ringwood Branch, which came up through what is now the Wanque Reservoir and the surrounding wooded area. On the south side of Margaret King Ave., behind the fence, you can see the flattened roadbed. I'm guessing that there was a switch at some point back there where the single line split. I have a picture somewhere in my archives of the old (gone) Ringwood Company Store with an Erie doodlebug on the near track, while the ore loading track appears to be empty.

The "new" aligment, which I think happened sometime in the early 1930s, placed the Ringwood line on a huge fill that curves to the west, and crosses Margaret King about 1/4 mile west of where the Ringwood Company store used to be. This alignment emptied into a yard that is now covered by the Ringwood municipal building & department of public works facility.

There are several places where you can view the remains of the SMRR, which ran parallel to and under the bed of Sloatsburg Road, just north of Ringwood and West Milford, NJ. The actual junction was obliterated when the Sterling Mine Road exit and overpass off of Route 17 was constructed.
>
>T
>
>
>----- Original Message -----
>From: Fred Stratton <erief7@msn.com>
>Date: Friday, August 11, 2006 8:56 am
>Subject: (erielack) Sterling Mt.
