(erielack) EL 932 at Shack
Listers (rightest or leftist; I'm mostly apolitical these days):
I don't recall seeing a response to Ron Dukarm's post on the location of the
shack in the Emil Walerko shot from 1970. If it has already been figured
out, or it's just too easy, please ignore this. If not, then here's my
guess: Garfield NJ, Dundee Branch Junction. The 932 is most likely coming
east on a local from Suffern or Waldwick (short hood forward e/b on NY Div
commuter trains circa 1970). In the following shot of the 929 at the
mystery location, the train is also eastbound, but appears to be a Port
Jervis run given the two tone paint on the Stillwells (the
"semi-suburbans"/semi-long distance). This could be train 54, which usually
had an E8 at the time; but I have a shot of 54 somewhere with a 1400 geep.
So why not an occasional 900, which could keep time with a 5 car train as 54
usually had.
The semi-suburbans rule out the NJNY or the Boonton Line. The 932 with the
plain Stillwells probably rules out anything west of Suffern. The double
track indicates east of Ridgewood. The semi-suburbans normally wouldn't go
down the Main via Paterson in 1970, unless it was the Saturday train from
Port (# 70). Any shack in Paterson would probably be on the north-east side
of the track; this is clearly on the south-west, given the e/b direction of
the train. Anyplace east of Paterson is DL&W country (former Boonton Line),
and that ain't no DL&W shack. It's not Rutherford, not Passaic Jct., doesn't
look like Fairlawn on the County Line either. Also, Mr. Walerko lived in
Garfield at the time (I knew someone who knew him).
Only old pic I could find of the Dundee Junction area was on p. 10 of
Diamond Vol. 9 #1. The spot where the shack would be is blocked by the ATSF
boxcar, but the smokestack and telephone poles to the south-west of the
tracks look familiar, and there appears to be a speed circle on the right
(above the auto), as in Mr. Walerko's shot. At the time I lived only 4
miles or so from this spot (if I'm right about it), but never stopped to get
a shot of this interesting little structure. I now regret having ignored
it; glad Mr. Walerko got around to it.
That's my guess.

List,
I'm currently scanning RS-3s and just ran across this shack.
I assume its EL. I don't know the location but I'm sure you NJ
guys will pin it down. Are there any stories that go with this one?
