All of the talk about the dumping of waste reminds me of where I grew up in
Dunmore PA along the Erie's Scranton Branch.
United Gilsonite Laboratories (aka UGL and is still there) was served by
Erie's Scranton Branch. UGL manufactures all kinds of home maintenance products,
such as DRYLOK and ZAR products. Check them out at _www.ugl.com_
(http://www.ugl.com)
They had no problem with dumping their waste behind the houses where I grew
up. After a period of time, what was once an overgrown field looked grey. Weeds
couldn't grow there. During their shifts, the employees would take damaged
product and dump it. Eventually the tubes would leak with the waste being
absorbed into the ground.
As far as I know, the Borough of Dunmore PA never took UGL to task on this
and Erie/EL continued to serve them. This, of course, had nothing to do with
Erie/EL but the more dumping that took place, the closer the "grey field" got to
the tracks. At a point in the mid-60s, the "grey field" changed course and
moved in the direction of the houses. Go figure.
While this is nowhere near the extent of what the water bottles discharged,
it is one and the same. I'm sure others can share stories of what was dumped
along EL and its predecessors.
